Electronics Showdown-Amazon vs Walmart

It is the classic face-off between the king of bricks-and-mortar and the ruler of the e-commerce world. Wal-Mart (WMT) is about to up its bet on consumer electronics, a highly profitable and growing part of Amazon’s (AMZN) business.

At stake is whether physical stores can take back business from e-commerce sites which have been besting them at sales growth rates for nearly a decade.

According to The Wall Street Journal, “Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) is revamping the electronics departments in its more than 3,500 U.S. stores this week, ramping up an aggressive battle with Best Buy Co. (BBY) and Amazon.com”

Taking market share from Best Buy will only prove that Wal-Mart can still use its large numbers of stores and customers and its ability to sell merchandise at low margins in bulk to take business from a smaller bricks-and-mortar continues to be a success. Amazon is another matter.

Amazon holds several advantages that will make Wal-Mart’s task hard, if not impossible. The first is a nearly infinite selection of consumer electronics that come in every size, color, and configuration. Amazon also allows people to comparison shop effortlessly and stay out of crowded stores. Its shipping practices often allow people to get products sent to their homes at no cost.

If Amazon has proven one thing over the years it is that it can grow faster than almost any retailer that relies on physical locations. There is absolutely no reason to think that will change.

Consumer Reviews

I use to work at Walmart and understand how both sides of the complaints work. First people that work at Walmart are not trained and are put under unreasonable working conditions, with the threat of being couched (written up)or fired. WE won’t get into firing Fridays, but you get the hint. And the way Walmart managers make money is to have just enough workers to get buy.

This helps cost for the end of year totals. also the rule is only one week end off a month, And most workers don’t ever get a weekend off. So, yes most workers are not in great moods.

Now in two years my car has had smoke damage and hit by four carts in the parking lot and your at your own risk… And yes they sell used returns as new items. So really look at what you buy. Your Walmart knows you will be back to shop no matter how they treat you. And yes Walmart is right, you will be back.

I shop Wal-Mart weekly for groceries and any other items we need. My store is always clean, the cashiers are not gruff and mean and usually friendly and helpful. Most any item I shop for I find and always at a good price.

Small stores cannot compete with Wal-Mart and many have closed as a result. The buggy makers did not survive Henry Ford’s invention, either. Times change – quit sniveling!

All the whining, false stories and other accusations made against this great company do not change the fact that millions of people spend billions of dollars world-wide at Wal-Mart because it really is a heck of a value!

I love Amazon for the selection, the free shipping, the product reviews and the availability. I shop at Amazon all the time. I was a little suprised this time around when I went to find a fisher price dollhouse for my daughter. It was sold out at fisherprice.com, but Amazon had it — but it was almost twice the price. When I went back to check on accessories a few days later, the price had increased again. I supposed this is a free market economy and price drives demand, but it hit me wrong that the price was that much higher than fisher price’s posted price.

I have ordered dozens of things from Amazon and its associated retailers and never had the slightest problem. The orders that I’ve done directly with Amazon.com have been particularly satisfactory. BUT — you’ve got to remember that when you order from Amazon’s many associated retailers, the rules can change. Those retailers usually have separate tracking systems, return policies, and so on. It pays to check out unfamiliar retailers, even if you find them through Amazon, by doing an Internet search on them before you buy.
