JVC DRMV100B DVD Recorder VCR Combo Review

Samsung LN55A950 1080p LCD HDTV
General Information

The JVC DRMV100b is a DVD+VHS recorder. It is compatible with DivX(R) format among others, offers both digital and analog tuners and features HDMI output with 1080p/720p Up-Conversion. Amazingly, the following formats are all playable on this machine: DVD-RW, DVD-R, +RW, +R, +R (Dual), WMA/MP3/JPEG Digital Still/DivX(R), CD, CD-R/RW, SVCD/VCD, VHS Hi-Fi, DVD-Video,and DVD-RAM.

It can record in VHS Hi-Fi, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW and DVD-R, +RW, +R formats and also features progressive scan output. Additional notable features include an i.LINK connection with DV input, a Super MPEG encode pre-processor and post processor, 12 hour DVD recording, High resolution GUI, a Manual timer programming, and One touch recording.

All of this functionality comes in a neat little package in the JVC DRMV100b, less than three inches high. There are pros and cons to this technology so let’s get into some of the positives and negatives that have occurred with this piece.

First of all, the JVC DRMV100b machine gets the job done. Converting VHS home movies onto DVD is at the top of many peoples to do list. On the down side, the machine has needed to be rebooted several times so apparently there are still some bugs with the technology. If you have any trouble you can always call up JVC and they will help you get it sorted. I also recommend reading the user manual very carefully because if you aren’t operating it right it is likely that you will run into problems that could have been prevented. The manual can be confusing in parts so again, call JVC for some help if anything is confusing or you can’t get things working right. Once it is set up and you know how to use it, it should be very simple to operate.

Some have experienced the machine freezing randomly during recording TV shows and stopping during the middle of a copying project to complain about illegal copying – even if you are just doing your own home movies or something. The upshot is, this machine does a great job when it is working and most of the time it works fine. There may be a few problems with it but I think most people would agree that the general consensus on the JVC DRMV100b is that it is better than most of the competition out there. I have heard of several people who tried and returned one, two or even more other similar units before settling on this one so it is probably a good bet despite its glitches.

Consumer Reviews

Rating: ★★★½☆

Excellent product in all respects but two. The remote control is not a universal remote. Therefore, if your TV is not a JVC you will need two remotes. Also, in an attempt to rectify the situation, I purchased a universal remote. Unfortunately, I could not get the JVC product to work even though I went through every code available.

The player is very easy to program to record shows and the playback is very close to HD quality when recorded to DVD-RW. Also works great when recording to standard DVD+R’s. The audio is recorded in 2 channel stereo only even on programs that are broadcast in 5.1. The ATSC Cable QAM tuner had no problem finding the unscrambled local HD channels on Comcast cable and correctly identified the actual and virtual channel numbers and Station ID’s. I copied a VHS tape to DVD and it was very simple and did a excellent job. This is a very high quality product that does what it claims to do and at this price is a real bargain.

After buying 2 similar units (a Sony and a Magnavox) and returning them both, I was skeptical that this would be The One. Well, so far, this unit has performed very well in all areas. We record most of our TV shows to watch later so a tuner was important so that we could watch another program (or go to work) while recording one or more. So far, recording to DVD-R or to VHS has been successful with fairly simple instructions. The various menus are a little different at first but they make sense after a few times. Setup and channel preset were very easy and efficient. The remote is, of course, itsy bitsy, but it could be worse and they do include batteries! I have dubbed a few VHS tapes to DVD-R with success – they look better than the originals in most cases. I am also discovering the joys of recording a TV program to a DVD-RW instead of a VHS tape. DVD viewing is great and it also plays audio CDs quite well although I wish it could read the track information instead of simply saying “Track One, Track Two,” etc. However, since I don’t expect to use the DVD player as an audio player, it isn’t a big deal. I am quite happy with this player – third time’s the charm, apparently.
