Magnavox TB100MW9 DTV Tuner Converter Box Review

General Information
The Magnavox TB100MW9 (Magnavox TB100MG9 has been discontinued and replaced by this upgraded version) and Magnavox TB100MW9A (with analog pass-through) have the standard features found on most DTV converter boxes. While the image is not of DVD type quality it is still better the most standard definition television broadcasts. The program guide gives brief summary of content for several hours of programming on the current channel. It does have a channel scanner, however you can tune to a specific channel without the scan. The remote control is very basic and most options will have to be changed though the on-screen menu. The box itself does not have any buttons, so all operation is conducted with the remote control.

The TB100MW9 has a signal strength meter which allows you to make adjustments to your antennae for the best reception. If you live in an area with low power TV stations, you will want to get the Magnavox TB100MW9A with analog pass-through. Otherwise, the Magnavox TB100MW9 will do just fine.

If you are looking for a DTV converter box with DVD quality sound and picture, then you should check out the Tivax STB-T9 or the Tivax STB-T8.

Product Details
The consumer electronics industry as we know it today had its beginnings with the invention of the loudspeaker in 1915. It is the very same electro-dynamic principle that drives virtually every modern loudspeaker…in your car…in theaters…in outdoor concerts…and in your home. Because the loudspeaker afforded the world the first example of amplified open-air listening, it was dubbed the “Great Voice”. Because the inventors (Edwin Pridham and Peter Jensen ) had a fondness for Latin, they translated their “Great Voice” into the Latin equivalent: Magna-Vox, and one of the world’s most enduring and respected brand names was born. Magnavox…Smart. Very Smart.

Consumer Feedback

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Positives for the TB100MW9 so far:
Can skip auto scan…Can manually enter true RF channel number. It then brings up a small screen indicating “SCANNING.” If it locates a station, it brings it up. If it doesn’t find it initially, it will allow you sit on the channel and then when the channel is found it will lock it in and bring it up on the screen.

It has a signal meter, via the “DISPLAY” button or through the menu button. The one through the menu gives a full graph giving a visual, plus it gives a “NOW” signal reading plus a constant “PEAK” reading, indicating the highest signal registered. So far, the signal strength screen does not seem to time out. AND it stays up even while changing from channel to channel.

It automatically remaps the channel from the true RF channel to its virtual channel number. The “DISPLAY” button also indicates the call letters of the station. Has 3 Display Modes: Letterbox, Zoom and Full. Has Auto Power Down feature with 4 settings: Off, 4 hours, 2 hours and 1 hour.

Seems to be very user friendly.

Negatives with the TB100MW9 so far:
Is slower than the ATSC11 at initially locating and decoding a new station. But once it is locked, no doubt that it is better at holding and retaining the station over the RCA.

We’ve had basic cable for years because the analog signal we received with our outdoor antenna didn’t get all the network channels clearly. We hooked up this new box (very simple) and all network channels and about 4 others come in crystal clear. Cable was cancelled yesterday… Free TV! We love this unit and have been very satisfied.

I just got two Magnavox TB100MW9 tuners for two old NTSC TVs which I have. It works great! Picks up far-off stations that my old Samsung SIR-T151 has trouble with. Picture looks great for what it is. Remote sucks.

I have the Magnavox TB100MW9 DTV Converter Box. I have tried multiple times to get it to work. We have hooked it up to our rooftop antenna, we have hooked it up to our rabbit ears on the tv but nothing!!! NO CHANNELS ARE EVER PICKED UP!!! Every time it comes back saying
NO SIGNAL. Does this converter box even work at all??? We live in MD 21915 zip code.

    Carolyn,

It may be that your antenna is not strong enough. Check out antennaweb.org. Click the “Choose an antenna” then, enter your address including the zip code. You should get a list of all digital and analog stations available. They will also provide the distance and direction they are from your location. Just remember that the terrain and structures close to your house will also affect your reception. I hope this helps you.
