Mitsubishi L65-A90 65″ LaserVue 1080p DLP HDTV Review

Mitsubishi L65-A90
General Information
Mitsubishi unveiled a new category of large-format televisions with ground-breaking laser technology at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2008. According to Frank DeMartin, Marketing VP, Mitsubishi Digital Electronics Electronics America, “Mitsubishi has created a new category in television with laser technology and now we are creating an exciting new brand, LaserVue, which we believe consumers will equate with the best in high-definition televisions.”

Mitsubishi claims, “Laser beams provide the widest range of rich, complex colors, along with the most clarity and depth of field. Precise and focused, the purity of laser light far surpasses current high definition technologies. The color gamut as a percentage of BT.709 for LaserVue prototypes, has been measured at approximately 200 percent, delivering over twice the color of many of today’s HDTVs. Brightness has been demonstrated at about 500 nits. Additional features for LaserVue TV include Smooth120hz and x.v.Color.”

The company recently premiered the new Mitsubishi L65-A90 65″ LaserVue™ 1080p DLP HDTV in San Antonio, TX. During Bjorn’s Audio-Video 33rd Anniversery Sale, they offered two areas to view the 65 inch LaserVue DLP. In their showroom tractor trailer outside, the LaserVue 1080p DLP showed 3D programming from a home theatre PC. While inside Bjorn’s was a second L65-A90 along with similar LCD and plasma HDTVs for close comparison.

“Earlier reports from CES stated that the colors on Mitsubishi’s prototype almost seemed surreal, and I’d agree. We made sure the settings were as balanced as possible between the three displays, and the color performance on the LaserVue was still noticeably more impressive,” according to Cameron Baker and Kurtis Kronk of The Tech Lounge.

Gary Merson, of hdguru.com fame, recently put the new L65-A90 LaserVue through his own tests at Mitsubishi’s U. S. headquarters in California. Gary was so impressed with his analysis he rated this set in the top teir of all HDTV’s. He stated, “the L65-A90’s will treat you to a level of performance that exceeds any display I have tested to date in terms color gamut, brightness and low power consumption.”

At 10 inches deep, this maybe the thinnest projection television on the market. With the LaserVue’s thin design, Mitsubishi has built this DLP projection television for wall mount applications, too. The viewing angle is a bit below most LCD HDTV’s with plasma’s TV’s reigning as the viewing angle king. If you want to stay environmentally-friendly, the L65-A90 65″ LaserVue only uses about one third the power consumption of plasma and LCD televisions.

These DLP HDTVs also include the 3D Ready feature and will probably be in short supply while Mitsubishi ramps up production. The L65-A90 should be available in time for the big upcoming holiday season sales for a whopping $6,999.99. The L73-A90, the 73 inch LaserVue DLP will most likely come out sometime next year, however, Mitsubishi has not given a specific time frame.
