Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK DVD Recorder/VCR Combo Review

Samsung LN55A950 1080p LCD HDTV
General Information
If you have VHS tapes of graduations, weddings, birthday parties, or family reunions and want to convert your old VHS video recordings to DVD, the Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK DVD Recorder is exactly what you need. The DMR-EZ48VK is a single disc DVD / VHS VCR combo recorder which includes a digital tuner and 1080p up-conversion capabilities. By interpolating video data using proprietary algorithms, SD format data is up-converted to 1080 x 1920p HD format video data. This conversion increases the richness of the original data by almost six fold, producing the highest possible image quality when viewing content on a large-screen HDTV. The DMR-EZ48VK will also convert standard-definition DVDs to 1080p. Of course you should not expect Blu-Ray quality, however depending on your HDTV capabilities your DVD movies should look better.

The Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK DVD-VHS Recorder Combo is compatible with all standard types of recordable DVD media, including DVD-RAM and dual-layer discs. With DVD-RAM, you can watch your program while it is recording. Plus, you can record something on the DVD-RAM disc while watching something else on the same DVD-RAM disc. This gives you simulated digital video recorder. According to Cnet, “The most promising DVD recorders with ATSC tuners we saw were Panasonic’s. That’s because the new Panasonics offer two of the same useful features found on the company’s previous recorders: DVD-RAM support and a Best-in-class LP mode.”

While the digital tuner receives both digital and analog broadcasts it does not output true high definition video from the ATSC tuner. The signal is actually down converted to standard digital and then up converted 1080p. Nevertheless, the down converted digital signal will look much better than a normal analog signal and maintains the wide-screen aspect ratios available with some movies. Regrettably it does not have an electronic program guide which is common for most DVD recorders.

The Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK DVD-VHS Combo is equipped with an SD Memory Card slot and a USB connection, which allows you to view your photos from your digital camera or external device. Just slip the SD card into the slot or use the cable to connect the device to the USB slot, and you’re ready to enjoy your slide show with family and friends. Plus, you can even listen to music recorded onto a USB device while viewing your photos.

You have plenty of connectivity options with the DMR-EZ48VK. The HDMI output allows you to up convert standard digital to, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p resolution for DVDs, VHS tapes, and even digital television. Additionally, there are audio/video inputs, along with S-Video, USB, and more. The USB port allows playback of JPEG images, MP3, and DivX items.

Overall, with it’s built in digital tuner, 1080p up-conversion, DVD media compatibility, and excellent recording quality, the Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK DVD Recorder/VHS VCR Combo has most features anyone would need in a DVD/VHS recorder.

Consumer Reviews

Rating: ★★★½☆

Got this to because a Panasonic DMRES30V VCR DVD recorder I purchased in November, 2005 which I used as a work horse recorder, bit the dust.

I actually replaced the DMRES30V with a DMRES35VPS and replaced the 35VPS with the DME-EZ48VK which was easy to install and line up since it is similiar to my other Panasonic models.

It is in a stack which presently records TV programs mainly on tape and If I choose to keep the recordings, then I re-record on DVD minus the commercials.

I choose not to do direct VHS to DVD transfers on one machine because I find the machines have a higher breakdown rate and this includes all makes and models.

One very definite plus is the power cord disconnects from the unit and when setting in a new machine, the power cord simply re-attaches to the new unit without having to go to the wall plug.

I had been using Panasonic VCR’s for about 15 to 20 years and am well pleased with their products.

My TV is analog with 2 VCRs hooked up, I am non cable or satellite. All I did was swap out 1 of my old VCR for this one and it worked perfectly. There are so many nice features on this unit. Since I am old I will be reading the manual for a while. I love all the features I have figured out so far. The $20 I spent with the $40 coupon for the converter box was a waste of my $20.

Strengths: It is very easy to use and setup, it has a lot of features, and it has a lot of convenient ports.
Weaknesses: In order to select a drive, you have to search for it, using one button, instead of having one button for each drive.
Summary: I purchased this unit about 1 month ago, and I really like it. I didn’t have any problems with it yet. The picture quality is great, and it records all of my shows nicely. This unit does have a digital tuner, which allows you to watch digital channels on your TV. The remote has a very nice design to it, and is very easy to use. The front USB port is very convenient, and can be used to save stilled images to a flash drive, or even to use your camcorder on your TV. The front Firewire port is also a good feature. I really that this unit has 2 Composite outputs, common and priority. This unit also has a Component video output, and also an HDMI output, which are nice features to have. There are only 2 little things that I don’t like about this unit. One thing is that you cannot Unfinalize a DVD. I was able to do this with an older GoVideo recorder. The other thing I don’t like is that in order to switch between the DVD drive and the VHS drive, there is a button you need to press labeled Drive Select, and you have to go through DVD, sD, and USB, if you want to get to the VHS. It would be better if there was a button for each selection, instead of having to search for it, through one button. But at least it switches modes automatically when you insert something, like a VHS, or DVD. But besides those 2 things, this is a very good Recorder to own. I would highly recommend it.
