The verdict is in on Pioneer televisions; they are high quality machines. Most everyone that has used the new Pioneer Kuro PDP-5020FD has had almost nothing but praise for it, although there are some decisions that will have to be made by the consumer when deciding on whether or not this is the right purchase for them.
The Pioneer Kuro PDP-5020FD is definitely a high end flat screen television. For starters, it is a plasma screen rather than an LCD, which means that the screen will be brighter and more vivid to start. The frame is sleek, and well designed. Many customers have praised the design aspect of many a pioneer plasma television, and this model is no exception. To fully understand the reason that this television is worth the price, you must understand the concept of black levels. The black level of a television is it’s most imperative characteristic when it comes to color capability. The more black a screen can get, the better the control of the picture. The Pioneer Kuro PDP-5020FD has excellent black levels, which give it the ability to make crisp, clean images that are perfect or any movie buff. There are a few downsides to this pioneer 50 inch plasma, however. The basic color correctness all around is a bit to be desired. The menu is rather difficult to adjust, so it takes some fine tuning to be able to get the best performance out of this set. Because the price is so high, this can be a major deal breaker when considering this model. Another negative aspect of the Pioneer Kuro PDP-5020FD is a small design flaw. While flaw might be overstating things, some people have found the indented strip next to the screen to be a problem. In darkened home theaters especially, they found that light reflected off of the casing, causing a distracting blurred edge. This is not the end of the world for watching movies, but it is a distraction nonetheless. At the end of the day, movie buffs will love the ability to get the truest picture out of this set. This television is not for everyone, as it is quite pricey. Most high definition lovers still think that the Pioneer Kuro PDP-5020FD is a good buy for any home theater. |

Just got my 5020 last week and this is the best TV that I have seen. I did a lot of research at high end stores and the side by side comparisons with the older 5010 model vs. any other tv (lcd or plasma) wasn’t even close. I was looking at the newest Samsung plasmas and LCD’s (Toc) but the black levels on the Pioneer really made a big difference. I even asked my 10 year old son to pick the tv with the best picture and he chose the Pioneer. I really wanted to buy the Samsung LCD (Toc) but couldn’t get myself to do it knowing the Pioneer’s picture was better. I think I would have regretted it later. The 5020 is thinner than the 5010 and has the newest HDMI 1.3a inputs. I hooked this TV to a brand new Onkyo 606 which is HDMI 1.3a compliant, Time Warner DVR, and a PS3. All I needed was 3 HDMI cables for the entire system. This TV has the best black levels i have seen which makes the colors really pop and gives more depth to the picture. The TV makes the high def content more 3 dimensional. At this price, you can’t go wrong with this plasma. In addition, this will be the last year that Pioneer makes their own screens. |

| Does NOT have a cable card slot as some online descriptions say so be alert on this. That was the only disappointment on getting it as I was misinformed by ads. Don’t know if it would be a useable option anyway. But this TV kicks the competition. It even has a decent sound amp and speaker bar, and a SUBWOOFER output! Offers much picture options so you can make one of them your personal setting by several adjustments. But does NOT offer the color options of the “Elite” model. Use the “Normal” setting to fine tune your own favorite options. Then you can shuffle between the others for variety. Hook it up to a Y****a sound bar and subwoofer and you won’t need a complicated home theater set-up. One thing though, and this is not a defect, just a reality of all HD TV’s. This TV has deep blacks that really bring out the negatives of poor reception. So if you have analog cable and have not opted for digital and HD programming packages don’t expect clear pictures on the local channels. The regular analog channels will be grainy and somewhat fuzzy. The other channels like History, ESPN, TCM, and such are fine. You need at least “Digital” and ideally “HD digital” programming to really use this TV’s potential. Excelsior! | |
