“Sharp Corporation will introduce into the Japanese market the 16-model AQUOS DX Series (including 52V-, 46V-, 42V-, 37V-, 32V-, and 26V-inch*2 models), the world’s first series of LCD TVs equipped with Blu-ray Disc Recorders,” according to their recent press release.
Mikio Katayama, Sharp Corporation President & COO, stated,”By launching them in the year-end shopping season, we are aiming to do our best in fighting sluggish consumption, a slowing economy, an adverse business environment and fierce competition.”
The new AQUOS DX Series with it’s integrated Blu-ray player/recorder will offer four different recording modes: standard, 2X, 3X, and 5X. Using MPEG2 and MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video compression, these Blu-ray integrated LCD HDTV’s can record up to approximately 21 hours in 5X mode (When using a 50 GB [single-sided, dual-layer] disc). However, embedded program data links of audio surround-sound data cannot be retained when using 5X extended HD recording.
The LC-52DX1, LC-46DX1, LC-42DX1, and LC-37DX1 will feature full high definition 1080p (1,920 x 1,080) resolution. While the LC-32DX1 and LC-26DX1 models will offer 720p (1,366 x 768) high definition output. All of the DX Series models will be equipped with Sharp’s 1-Bit digital amp and side-port Bass Reflex Speaker for a powerful compact sound system.
Sharp will offer black, white, and red color variations in all but the 52 inch and 46 inch sets which will be available in black or white. This will allow for better interior design matching. Other features include the smooth picture quality of a Kameyama LCD panel and a new Motion Guide which automatically plays discs once they are inserted into the Blu-ray player.
The new AQUOS DX Series LCD TVs will be available in Japan starting November 20, 2008. The world’s first LCD TVs with built-in Blu-ray should hit the North American market by the end of the year. The Asian and European markets should start seeing these televisions sometime next year. No firm availablity dates for markets other than Japan have been released, yet. Models sold outside of Japan will have an integreted Blu-ray player, instead of a Blu-ray recorder, according to Mikio Katayama at the Tokyo press conference on Wednesday October 15, 2008.
